Aubergine with Garlic and Mushrooms

By Sid • Jul 24th, 2008 • Category: Posts

Breakfast this morning was an uninspired platter of buttered (low fat) toast with fried eggs, sunny side up. For some reason, Cherie has started disliking fried eggs which used to be her favorite. Interestingly, she couldn’t get enough of mushrooms in the past and now she can’t run far enough from them.
I completely forgot to [...]

Hollingwood Potatoes

By Sid • Jul 23rd, 2008 • Category: Posts

During my stay at Hollingwood Hall, I had a few opportunities to cook for my housemates. The first of these meals comprised of an elaborate pork dish that was stewed in coconut milk and a bunch of spices, simple potatoes flavored with cumin seed, a salad, rice and some wine. I’m quite used to people [...]

Store cupboard meal

By Toni Anne • Jul 18th, 2008 • Category: Posts

Alone tonight, I forgot to shop, so sat on the kitchen floor to investigate the stock on the shelves.
Quite interesting - I wonder, when I will ever eat three jars of honey?? I ended up with a small can of tomatoes, some dried, wild, Italian mushrooms, dried pasta called Mafalda Corta (from Naples! - I [...]

Day Four of our Trip to France

By Toni Anne • Jul 8th, 2008 • Category: Posts

We awoke to watery sunshine then went back to sleep.  We dozed for ages, it was so relaxing.  We read and drank coffee then went for a drive at about 3.00pm, by which time it was raining again.  We climbed Mont D’Or where D had been the previous evening but the 56 steps of the [...]

Curried Sausage with Vegetables

By Sid • Jun 25th, 2008 • Category: Non Vegetarian Food, Posts

I cooked this for dinner yesterday. It’s interesting what innovative dishes you come up with, when you don’t really have a choice of cooking implements or ingredients.
Looking up my inventory, I chopped up some courgettes, spring onions, potatoes, smoked sausage, mushrooms and french beans. Heated some oil, fried a little cumin seed, added some finely [...]

Our Third Day in France

By Toni Anne • Jun 23rd, 2008 • Category: Posts

We a woke to sunshine and I wore my summer clothes.  We had breakfast of fried eggs and mushrooms on  toasted sunflower bread, it was lovely.  French eggs all seem to have very yellow yolks and they are always delicious.  We read a little in the sunshine but soon had to have a little snooze…
We [...]

300 Articles Posted

By Sid • Jun 19th, 2008 • Category: Posts

This is the 301st post on Chef At Large. I just noticed it and it sounds like such a big number. Doesn’t seem that large in practice, since I had such a great time cooking, photographing and writing. Thank you all for visiting Chef at Large.
Guess that provides a reason for the change of look. [...]

Tastespotting Shuts Down

By Sid • Jun 18th, 2008 • Category: Posts

I’m sad today. One of my favourite-est food sites on the net - Taste Spotting, has been shut down, due to, as they say, ‘legal complications’. Without pondering over the cause, Tastespotting provided so much inspiration for my food pictures, garnishes and recipes, that one could well consider it a ‘mother lode’ of sorts, when [...]

Changing Look

By Sid • Jun 17th, 2008 • Category: Posts

Hello All,
I’m changing the theme of Chef At Large and things may alternate between wonky, woozy, topsy-turvy and mishy-mashy for a while till I’m done.
Bear with me please.
