Alcohol in Food
By Sid • May 6th, 2008 • Category: Healthy, PostsI’m not a big fan of using alcohol in food when children are to consume the same food. Did you know it affects brain development and actually kills brain cells? Looking for information on the Internet, I found that a large percentage of alcohol is retained in food even after cooking. Here are some facts you should know:
- alcohol added to boiling liquid & removed from heat - 85% alcohol retained
- alcohol flamed - 75% alcohol retained
- no heat, stored overnight - 70% alcohol retained
- baked, 25 minutes, alcohol not stirred into mixture - 45% alcohol retained
So much for people saying that the alcohol evaporates during cooking! You’ll find more information here. Also, there is no safe time to drink during pregnancy - the alcohol passes over from the mother to the foetus and the blood alcohol level of your unborn child is the same as yours! More on that here.
While it does affect the flavor of the food, I don’t think it’s worth it.
