Backgammon Players?
By Sid • Mar 28th, 2008 • Category: PostsI had this chess set as a kid. It was a simple foldable one, with a metal board and magnetic pieces. In the reverse, it had a backgammon board. I learnt the basics of the game, but chess continued to hold more attraction for me. That my brother went on to study the game and proceeded to beat me hollow is another story.
There appears to be a fair amount of history behind backgammon. Did you know that the ancient Egyptian game of senet greatly resembled backgammon and its moves were controlled by moves of the dice. Now you’ll probably say, "so is snakes and ladders my man", to which I would reply "but the board used in this game, looked quite similar to a backgammon board and had the same token structure too!", at which point you would murmur something intelligible and continue reading.
So thats that. But what prompted me write this post? Apparently, BackgammonMasters have applied for a Guiness Gamer World Record for the farthest toss of dice on backgammon board. Sounds interesting and perhaps even something one could try for a lark, however giant dice and a spare helicopter may be a bit of an issue. Confused? Read the press release below:

Ha! When I used to play (rather well!) the dice were not allowed to land off the board. If they did, one’s opponent gained the throw. Come on, it’s not really cricket is it?
Sid, can we have some smileys on this board please? And larger font, this one makes me squint.
Vinny, I will reply to you soon!
