Kitchen Equipment

Mystery Device

Struck by the entrepreneural bug, I’m thinking on the lines of opening a restaurant. After some serious and dedicated scratching of the old head, I came up with a list of required equipment, that I’m sure isn’t complete. What do you think I’ve left out?

Bain Maries, Baking Dishes, Baking Sheets, Can openers, Casseroles, Chopping Boards, Maker, Collanders, Convection oven, Copper Pans, Copper Pots, Electric Broiler / Grill, Flan Dishes, Food Processor, Freezer, Graters, Gratin Dish, Griddle Top Range with Oven, Grill Pan, Heat Lamps, Knives, Ladles, Microwave Oven, Mortar and Pestle, Non Stick Pans, Pans - Skillets, Peelers, Pepper Mill, Pie Plates, Portion Scales, Potholders, Prep and Steam Table, Preparation Sinks, Pressureless Steamer, Refrigerator, Roasting Pans, Roll Warmer, Sandwich Table, Pans, Signage, Slicer, Soap Dispensers, Souffle Dishes, Spatulas, Spoons, Steam Kettles, Stockpot, Storage Shelves, Strainers, Three Compartment Sink, Toaster, Tongs, Utensil Rack, Wok, Zester…

Which brings me to the grater like thing in the picture, which I don’t think is a grater, which I’ve been told is a lemon zester, but somehow, judging by the results, don’t think so. What do you think that is?

  1. Are you mad?  You’d never see your family and never be able to take time for a holiday!  If you are determined to do it though, please take advice from as many professional restauateurs as you can.  Only they can tell you what you will need and what the prospects might be.  Please think very carefully before taking this step, the cost could be enormous, in more ways than one.
As for the grater thing, how could anything made of plastic zest a lemon?  Maybe you could run it over a piece of not too hard cheese?
    Toni.

  2. Mad? Just a little bit so perhaps. :) Yes, you’re right about the advice part - I will be taking my time about it and talking to as many people as possible. Lets see what happens!

Have you seen this post btw?

But whenever you think of opening a restaurant, lemme know if I can help. Designing part I mean, I’m a Professional Graphic Designer.
I also have a dream of opening a restaurant, where brownie with ice cream are not sold for Rs. 95(85+Tax)but rather for Rs. 40-50 max, but with the same quality that CCD servers.

  4. Hey Jas - Haven’t thought of the name yet :) Just pondering over the viability/feasibility now.

I didn’t know you were were in graphic design - what kind of graphic design (print, large print, advertising, website, 3d…)

Other than the ‘Wicked Brownie’, what kind of food/ambience/theme were you thinking of?

  5. Hey Sid,
I replied to ur last post above long time back, but i couldn’t find it. Maybe it didn’t get submitted or something went wrong.
Yes, I am a Professional Graphic Designer and am doing freelance projects. Well I dont do printing work, exactly but I do design Brouchers, menus, flyers etc.
I am mainly into elearning and any design work related to online media.
Well about themes I have many ideas. every now n then. But, i want somthing thatz loved by customers for everything, just like Nirulas’ at ChanakyaPuri, that sadly closed down by the court. :(

  6. I know what you mean about Nirulas Chanakyapuri - Its the first Nirulas I ever visited and still remember sharing a banana split with my younger brother.

Unfortunately, Nirulas standards are dropping by the day and I no longer go there. Ok, maybe once in six months, to see if they’ve improved, since I did love the place. Otherwise, avoid.

  7. Sid,
I know how much u hate goin to Nirulas now and I too hate to go to ‘ANY’ Nirulas restaurant.

Poor quality of food and Steep prices.
WTF Hot chocolate fudge Rs. 100+
I was givin you the idea of the kinda restaurant I wanna open that customers will like to visit more n more, I don’t wanna open a restaurant with "HIGH-CLASS ONLY" tag!

  8. What I’m planning is a kind of comfort food place for breakfast and lunch and a fusion/gourmet/haute cuisine/nouvelle cuisine place in the evening. Lets see, its all hot air now. :)
