Store cupboard meal

By Toni Anne • Jul 18th, 2008 • Category: Posts

Alone tonight, I forgot to shop, so sat on the kitchen floor to investigate the stock on the shelves.

Quite interesting - I wonder, when I will ever eat three jars of honey?? I ended up with a small can of , some dried, wild, Italian , dried called Mafalda Corta (from Naples! - I have no idea how I got that) some from the fridge and marjoram from the garden.

I soaked the in at lunchtime, put the cloves to soak at the same time (to facilitate easy skin removal) and when I arrived home this evening, strained the , chopped them and set them aside. I put the mushroom water in a pan and reduced it by more than half, added some crushed ( some of the fresh that I bought a few months ago - they have very small cloves) added the , small can of , the marjoram and some Marigold stock powder. Having cooked the and the , I mixed them together, added some shredded from the pot on the windowsill and had a flavourful meal.

Then I remembered that I now have a camera and should have taken a photograph. But this website won’t let me add an image anyway…

  1. I know what you mean. I need to clear out my kitchen - we probably have anywhere between 50 to a hundred jars, bottles and containers with canneloni tubes, lasagna sheets, shiitake mushrooms, wood ear mushrooms, assorted spices, artificial flavors, food color liquids, food color powders, oils vinegars - ouch.

This happened largely because I used to be maniacal about stocking stuff, just in case they’re needed sometime. I’ve gotten over that now, but the effects remain.

Thankfully, the fridge is now mostly bare of left overs cluttered in little containers. The interesting thing is that normally we have to run the fridge at full blast, to avoid food spoiling, even in the fridge. Now with so little in there, we’ve had to turn it down a notch! One point for the environment. :-)

  2. BTW: I’m deeply offended you should accuse this excellent site of not allowing the addition of images. A hundred years back it would have had to be loaded spatulas at dawn. In today’s day and age however, lets meet up (online or phone) and I’ll demonstrate the image insertion procedure.

    :)

  3. Oh no! Not loaded spatulas! I tried to put an image on here, but I keep being told that I don’t have permission to do so…

  4. @Toni: Hmmm… that shouldn’t happen. If it does happen however, please send me the image in a separate mail and I’ll do the rest.
